Reminders for waste collection in the winter
Vaughan is once again blanketed in snow, and while it may be
pretty, it can impact curbside waste collection. Due to the snow, some
collection routes may be delayed this week.
Please keep in mind, waste bins or bags buried in snow, frozen to the bottom, on top of or behind snowbanks will not be collected.
Follow the below tips from the City of Vaughan to help ensure collection continues to run smoothly, safely and efficiently during the winter months:
- Clear a space in the snow at the curb for your waste bins and bags.
- Place your waste approximately one metre from the curb on the right-hand side of the driveway (when facing the home), where possible.
- Do not place items on top of or behind a snowbank.
- Keep waste bins and bags off the road.
- Ensure waste is placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on the day of your regularly scheduled collection. Waste collectors will not return for materials set out late.
- When snow is in the forecast for overnight, wait until the morning to place your waste out for collection.
Taking these steps allows crews to collect waste safely and for the City to clear snow effectively in residential areas.
Frozen waste materials
Did some of your items not get collected? In cold temperatures, some waste materials may freeze inside your bins and adhere directly to the bins' interior. If staff cannot dislodge the waste material, it will remain inside the bin. Keep any materials left in the bin until your next collection day. Crews cannot return for bins that were not fully emptied due to freezing. To help prevent your materials from freezing, place your waste curbside in the morning by 7 a.m. instead of leaving it out overnight.
