Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement to mark India Independence Day:
“Today, we
join with communities in Vaughan and around the world to recognize India’s 73rd
Independence Day, which commemorates India’s birth as a sovereign and democratic
nation.
“Through
acts of peace, persistence and unwavering determination, Indians have achieved
freedom and inspired movements for civil rights around the world.
“Vaughan’s
reach into global communities knows no boundaries. Nearly half of our population
was born abroad, and more than 105 different languages are spoken within our
borders. Diversity is truly one of our greatest strengths.
“Canadians of
South Asian descent have played a vital role in shaping Canada as the strong
and diverse country that we can all be proud to live in. Today is an
opportunity to reflect on the rich history, dynamic culture and meaningful
contributions of Vaughan’s Indo-Canadian community.
“I am proud
and grateful to live in a city where we embrace our diversity and celebrate
community every day. I extend my warmest wishes to everyone commemorating India’s
Independence Day.”
