Statement: Mayor Bevilacqua expresses support for new NAFTA
Urging swift ratification of new trade deal that will
benefit cities
The following statement was issued by
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua in response to the new NAFTA deal:
“The City of
Vaughan is truly representative of the economic strength and continued growth
that is required to move Canada forward on the world stage. Municipalities like
ours play an important role in the overall prosperity of our country by
supporting the social, economic and business cases for free and fair trade.
“Ratification
of the new NAFTA is a welcomed step forward for the City of Vaughan. Cities are
Canada’s economic engines and remain vital to building a more competitive and prosperous
future. We stand behind our federal partners and offer our support to quickly
ratify the deal that will bring greater economic certainty needed to move
ahead.
“As a member of
Parliament, I was part of a government that worked to strengthen global
connections, open new markets for trade and bring about unprecedented economic
prosperity.
“The City of
Vaughan is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada. With more than
12,000 businesses – 80 per cent of which are small businesses – and more than
60,000 jobs created since 2010, we take pride in being a major centre of
commerce and a leader in employment. With an economic growth rate of four per
cent, we remain confident that ratification of the new NAFTA will support our journey
towards continued prosperity.”
