Submit a nomination for the 2022 Municipal Election
The deadline to file as a candidate for Vaughan Council or
a school board is Friday, Aug. 19
Are you passionate about your community and thinking about running
in the 2022 Municipal Election? There is still time to file your nomination
form before the deadline, which is Friday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m.
Nominations for office on Vaughan Council or a school board may be filed with the
Office of the City Clerk by appointment only, in-person at Vaughan City
Hall, located at 2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.
Appointments are one-hour and are held during
regular business hours – from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, until
Thursday, Aug. 18. Appointments are not required on Nomination Day, Friday, Aug.
19, when applicants will be accepted on a drop-in basis between 9 a.m. and
2 p.m.
Filing a nomination
To file a nomination, candidates
must ensure all necessary forms are filled out and brought to the filing
appointment. Forms are available online at vaughan.ca/elections. Candidates must bring
proper identification to the filing appointment, including photo ID and proof
of Vaughan address. The nomination fee for Councillor or School Board Trustee is
$100 and for Mayor, $200. All City of Vaughan facilities are cashless. However,
payments in cash (exact amounts encouraged) will be accepted at Vaughan City
Hall as part of the candidate nomination process.
Original signatures are required for all
forms filed with Election Services. Agents who file on behalf of a candidate
must provide all of the above and their identification.
Candidate eligibility
To run
for Mayor, Local and Regional Councillor or Ward Councillor for the City of
Vaughan, on the day the nomination is filed, an eligible candidate must be:
- a Canadian citizen.
- at least 18 years of age or older.
- either a resident of the city of Vaughan, or an owner or tenant of property in the city of Vaughan, or the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in the city of Vaughan.
- not otherwise disqualified from holding municipal office under any law.
- any person who is not eligible to vote in the city of Vaughan
- an employee of the City of Vaughan who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence or resigned
- a judge of any court
- a Member of Parliament, a Member of Provincial Parliament or a Senator
- an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
- a candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last municipal election
- a Canadian citizen.
- at least 18 years of age or older.
- a resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board.
- eligible to vote for the school board.
- not otherwise disqualified from holding office on a school board under any law.
- any person who is not eligible to vote in the school board election
- an employee of a school board or a municipal official who has not taken an unpaid leave of absence or resigned
- a judge of any court
- a Member of Parliament, a Member of Provincial Parliament or a Senator
- an inmate serving a sentence in a penal or correctional institution
- a candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit(s) in the last school board election
