The Glen Shields Sun Devils 2000 under-11 soccer team was presented with a special recognition certificate by Vaughan Council at a Committee of the Whole Public Hearing meeting. The team is the first-ever winner of the BMO Team of the Year contest. Among the prizes, the team won $125,000 for a soccer renovation project in their community.

“Congratulations to the Sun Devils soccer team, their coaches and the Glen Shields Soccer Club. This is an outstanding accomplishment for this young team and shows dedication to their sport and to the community,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “I am also proud of our residents who voted for the team and helped bring this national victory to Vaughan.”

More than 500 soccer teams from across the country entered the contest and the Glen Shields Sun Devils were one of two teams from Vaughan to make the list of 15 finalists in the competition. The team that earned the most votes during the final two weeks of the competition was crowned the winner. The Glen Shields team received 72,677 votes to win the national title.

“The City of Vaughan is proud of its role in supporting amateur sport in the community through the many initiatives in our Active Together Master Plan,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “The City congratulates the Sun Devils for this achievement and looks forward to working with the soccer club in the future.”
