Vaughan Celebrates Black History Month

Jan. 30, 2014

In recognition of Black History Month, Vaughan residents and visitors are invited to celebrate Black Canadian heritage, traditions and achievements on Saturday, Feb. 1 and Sunday, Feb. 9. Black History Month celebrations support the City's Diversity Strategy, which aims to create opportunities for creative cultural expression and dialogue.

The Vaughan African Canadian Association (VACA), in collaboration with the Black Foundation of Community Networks, will be hosting celebratory activities on Feb. 1 from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dufferin Clark Community Centre, 1441 Clark Ave. W. Festivities include entertainment, guest speakers and live drumming, as well as a tribute to the life and times of Nelson Mandela.

Thornhill African Caribbean Canadian Association (TACCA), in conjunction with the City, will present the screening of a short film entitled Africville – Can’t Stop Now in celebration of Black History Month on Feb. 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at Vaughan City Hall. The film, presented in part through rare and archival footage, offers a glimpse into the life and times of Africville residents and their personal and community-based life journeys. Presentation highlights also include poetry readings and guest speakers celebrating black Canadian history. Refreshments will be served.
