The City of Vaughan has partnered with the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region to host a special Chinese New Year celebration on Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 12:00 (noon) to 2:00 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall.

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council invite residents, community groups, businesses and City staff to take part in the festivities welcoming the Year of the Dragon.

With the support of PowerStream, the event sponsor, the celebration will open with the traditional lion dance eye-dotting ceremony and will feature a variety of cultural presentations including the God of Good Fortune, Chinese folk dance, fortune telling, a Shoaling kung fu demonstration and musical performances. Chinese calligraphy and craft activities, art displays and customary Chinese refreshments also will be showcased.

Of all the traditional Chinese festivals that are celebrated around the world, the New Year is perhaps the most elaborate, colourful and important in the Chinese community.  It is a time to congratulate each other on having completed another year, and a time to part with the old and welcome in the new.
