Vaughan Celebrates National Public Works Week With Special Event

The City of Vaughan’s Public Works Department will be celebrating the 2011 National Public Works Week by inviting residents to attend the seventh annual Public Works Day event on May 14, 2011. National Public Works Week, May 15 to 21, 2011 highlights the essential services public works professionals provide residents.

The Public Works Day event will take place on Saturday, May 14 (rain or shine) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Joint Operations Centre located at 2800 Rutherford Road. Residents can access the site from Melville Avenue, one set of lights east of Jane Street. 
 
Event activities include:

• Public Works displays
• City vehicles and equipment
• Blue box, green bin, kitchen container and backyard composter sales
• Parks and Forestry Operations mulch giveaway
• Gently used household item donation
• PowerStream’s energy conservation booth
• York Region’s Water for Tomorrow program
• Ontario One Call
• Household hazardous waste and electronic waste recycling
• Dongara pellet plant information
• Super-Shred document destruction service
• Plus much more
 
In addition, a Public Works team will be participating in the York Region Area Municipalities Annual Public Works Week Challenge, taking place on Wednesday, May 18 at the Richmond Hill Public Works Yard and runs from 9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.  This competition is designed to highlight the skills of public works crews from the nine area municipalities and York Region. Teams are evaluated on a variety of tasks including backhoe operation, driving skills, watermain repair, and best-looking vehicle. Also featured are the Mayors’ Challenge from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. and Media Challenge obstacle courses which will be take place from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
