In celebration of National Access Awareness Week (NAAW), Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, Members of Council, the Senior Management Team and the City Clerk participated in an initiative today to raise awareness about accessibility. For one hour during a Committee of the Whole meeting on June 2, they sat in wheelchairs to experience firsthand the accessibility challenges that many in Vaughan face.

The City of Vaughan is committed to fostering a respectful and barrier-free community that offers accessible programs and services. The City understands the important role it plays in ensuring access for residents with disabilities, and continues to work to identify and remove barriers to lay the foundation for a vibrant and inclusive community.

On May 5, 2015, Council proclaimed May 31 to June 6 National Access Awareness Week in Vaughan. It was first established in 1988 to better promote community access for people with disabilities.
