Vaughan honours Italian Heritage Month

City Hall celebrates with flag-raising ceremony and art exhibits

The City of Vaughan, in collaboration with the National Congress of Italian Canadians, will mark Italian Heritage Month celebrations with a flag-raising ceremony on Monday, June 1 from noon to 1 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall. Official welcome will start at 12:30 p.m.

Italian Heritage Month, which was proclaimed in 2010, recognizes the contributions the Italian Canadian community has made to Ontario’s growth and prosperity.

Two art exhibits will be on display:

  • Beyond the Pose: Portraits by Albert Chiarandini (1915-2007) will be on display in the main atrium On the Slate gallery at City Hall. A gifted landscape and portrait painter, Chiarandini’s work has been featured alongside iconic members of the Group of Seven in prestigious annual exhibitions and continues to be exhibited in public art galleries today. Beyond the Pose was organized by the City thanks to the generous assistance and art loans received from the Georgina Art Centre and Gallery and private collectors. The exhibition is on display from June 1 to Aug. 14, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • A preview of paintings created by senior members of the Golden Age Academy will also be on display at City Hall during the month of June, complemented by a variety of two- and three-dimensional works of art displayed at Vaughan Arts Space, Maple Community Centre, 10190 Keele St. from July 9 to Sept. 3. Exhibition hours are Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
