As family, friends and dignitaries looked on, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council were officially sworn in at Vaughan City Hall on Monday, Dec. 1 at the inaugural meeting of Council.

Each Member of Council spoke, focusing on their goals for this new term of Council, as well as thanking their families, friends and residents. Mayor Bevilacqua gave the inaugural address – A City with Purpose – which focused on continuing to move the City forward. The speech highlighted the many projects currently underway in Vaughan, including the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and the hospital, as well as job growth and ways to improve traffic flow.

As part of the inauguration ceremony, the Mayor was given the Chain of Office, a symbol that has been used by civic authorities for hundreds of years. Vaughan’s modern version of the Chain of Office contains the City’s corporate seal as the centerpiece and links that are replicated on either side which include trilliums, Ontario’s provincial flower, the provincial and federal coat of arms, as well as maple leaves, in honour of our proud Canadian heritage.

The meeting began with a formal procession led by a piper from the York Regional Police Pipes and Drums, and the Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service Honour Guard. The Declaration of Office was administered by the Honourable Madam Justice Michelle Fuerst.

Residents were invited to celebrate the inauguration at a special reception held at the Terrace Banquet Centre.
