Vaughan Job Growth Tops in York Region

The City of Vaughan is leading the way when it comes to job growth in York Region. Between 2010 and 2011, the City experienced a 6.1 per cent growth in employment, the highest in York Region. Vaughan’s strong economic progress and leading employment growth rate are key findings of a recent study of employment trends by York Region.

“The City of Vaughan continues to grow at a remarkable pace, and the strength and diversity of our local economy has the city positioned to become the engine of growth in the Greater Toronto Area,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “We have more than 9,600 businesses in Vaughan and the number keeps growing. The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, our future downtown, and the Vaughan Enterprise Zone will bring more opportunities for job growth and support our expanding business community.”

In addition to leading the way in job creation, the study, based on a 2011 Employment Survey by York Region, showed the City of Vaughan had top numbers in both the automotive and construction sectors for the Region.

Powered by a number of companies that are divisions of some of the world’s leading automotive systems and components manufacturers, such as Magna International and ABC Group, the City of Vaughan made up 41.5 per cent of the Region’s total automotive employment base, accounting for more than 9,000 jobs.

In addition to these top companies, the City of Vaughan is on the forefront of research and development in the auto industry by being home to the National Research Council’s innovative $7.2 million research & development centre, the Composites Centre of Excellence. The facility is focused on developing next-generation vehicles with more durable parts that are safer, eco-friendly and fuel-efficient.

As with the automotive sector, Vaughan dominates the Region’s construction sector, making up 65.7 per cent of the total employment base in this sector, which translates to more than 19,800 jobs. Vaughan’s diverse business community has provided this sector with a fully integrated and  unique local network, with larger companies involved in residential, commercial and industrial construction, to smaller companies providing home renovation.

By 2031, Vaughan’s population is estimated to increase to 416,600 people and 266,100 jobs. The Vaughan Enterprise Zone, which covers more than 1,500 hectares in the City’s west end, is set to accommodate future industrial and commercial expansion in Vaughan, while the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre – Vaughan’s new downtown – will provide for one of the best locations for office employment in the GTA with direct subway access to downtown Toronto and York University.

“Vaughan is home to a number of leading-edge companies in advanced manufacturing, and the automotive and construction sectors, and a number of support industries such as transportation and distribution have also capitalized on our strategic location within the GTA,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. “Our highly-diversified economy is one of the reasons Vaughan continues to gain momentum when it comes to job growth, and attracting new businesses and investment.”
