Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the new artificial turf senior soccer field at the Concord Thornhill Regional Park on Monday, Sept. 16.

“The City of Vaughan continues to deliver upon its commitment to enhancing leisure opportunities and the quality of life for all citizens with the creation of a top-of-the-line FIFA standard artificial turf soccer field at Concord Thornhill Regional Park,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Our vision for a city that is active together is truly being realized through the growing number of safe, functional and accessible recreation opportunities that are now available to our residents.”

In support of Vaughan’s Active Together Master Plan, the City pursued the development of this artificial field, which provides extended seasonal play, requires less maintenance and provides a consistent, durable and flexible playing surface that can be used for a variety of sports all year round.

“I am very pleased with the planning and development that went into this new recreational playing field that everyone in our community can enjoy,” said Ward 5 Councillor Alan Shefman. “With this new artificial turf soccer field, not only are we able to meet the growing need for organized community sports, but we are also doing our part to encourage physical activity and healthier active living across all age groups.”

Construction of the $1.25-million artificial turf field was supported with funding from community partners. The Glen Shields Futbol Club contributed $130,000 towards the construction and $125,000 from the BMO Team of the Week prize money. The Ontario Tire Stewardship provided a $9,520 grant for using recycled rubber tires in the construction of the artificial field.

Located at 299 Racco Parkway in Thornhill, the new field features:

  • A FIFA 1 star approved artificial turf play surface
  • Bleacher seating to accommodate up to 140 spectators
  • Sports lighting
  • Field lines to incorporate two 9v9 fields
  • An electronic scoreboard
  • Perimeter and backstop chain-link fencing
  • Players benches
  • Concrete perimeter curbing and all necessary site servicing
