Vaughan is Ready for Winter - Where is My Snowplow Tool Allows Residents to Find out Status of Plowing Activities
Getting around during the winter months can be challenging when the roads are covered in snow and ice. The City of Vaughan has an online tool that will help residents make their way on City streets by showing them where the snowplows are.
The Where is my Snowplow tool allows residents to find out the status of plowing activities in their neighbourhood. Residents can visit vaughan.ca/snow to view the tool, find their neighbourhood and see when the roads have been plowed.
Vaughan maintains more than 2,000 kilometres of road and 1,000 kilometres of sidewalks. During the winter months this includes snow plowing, salting and the use of liquid anti-icing material. Vaughan’s anti-icing program involves applying a premium salt brine solution to select roadways including bridge decks, sharp curves and steep inclines prior to a storm. This reduces overall salt usage and helps prevent ice from forming in these areas during the early stages of a storm.
Residents and motorists can assist with snow-clearing operations by following these tips:
- Stay off the roads during a heavy snowstorm unless it is essential
- Do not park on the road
- Clear snow and ice from the public sidewalk in front of your property
- Do not pile or blow snow onto the roadway. It is an offence under the Highway Traffic Act to place snow on the roadway
- Stay well back from plows and salting equipment
The City plows the main roads and side streets once five centimetres of snow has fallen. The main roads are cleared within four hours and the side streets within 12 hours. Sidewalks on main roads are cleared within eight hours of a snowfall and within 16 hours on side streets. Major roads, such as Bathurst Street, Dufferin Street, Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, are maintained by York Region.
