The City of Vaughan received the 2011 Community Campaign Spirit Award from the United Way of York Region at an event held recently.

More than 20,000 donors, 2,000 volunteers and 250 businesses in York Region came together to raise $8.18 million for the 2011 fundraising campaign, a one per cent increase over 2010.

"The United Way is an important charitable organization doing meaningful work to address issues that require our attention and care,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “The United Way’s outstanding work in York Region connects people and resources and helps to build stronger communities and a better quality of life for the hundreds of thousands of people it touches. We are very proud of this award, because, as I often say, the City of Vaughan is defined by our great spirit of generosity.”

The Spirit Awards recognize campaigns, organizations, teams and individuals for exceptional results in their United Way fundraising drive. The City of Vaughan was also nominated for 2011’s Municipal Challenge and the Quantum Leap Spirit Award. The event drew a crowd of more than 400 donors and volunteers who took part in the organization’s High Tea Celebration at the Bellagio Banquet Hall.

“I would like to recognize and thank our City staff for their spirit, dedication, hard work and commitment during the United Way of York Region’s 2011 campaign,” said Barbara Cribbett, Commissioner of Finance and City Treasurer and Chair of the City’s United Way Campaign. “Their tireless efforts resulted in a record breaking year. Our goal of $65,000 was surpassed with a grand total of $89,916. The total includes a $15,000 contribution from the Mayor’s Gala and golf tournament.”
