Vaughan Recognizes National Access Awareness Events With Inclusive Activities
The Vaughan Accessibility Advisory Committee, in conjunction with the City of Vaughan, will host free leisure activities at recreation facilities across Vaughan from June 3-9 in support of National Access Awareness Week (NAAW). The various activities showcase the City’s partnerships and special needs programs that help people with disabilities integrate into the community.
Event highlights include:
• ZumbasticFuntastic at Sonoma Heights Park, which features cooperative games, zumba, a scavenger hunt, bocce and a fire-safety workshop
• Fun Club at Chancellor Community Centre which includes bocce, swimming, arts and crafts and games
• A bake sale at Al Palladini Community Centre, with proceeds going to Vita Community Living Services
• Wheelchair basketball at Vellore Village Community Centre
• Recreational bocce at Father E. Bulfon Community Centre
• A public meeting regarding accessible recreation programming at Maple Community Centre
• Parent and child badminton at Dufferin Clark Community Centre
• Drop-in games such as ping pong, air hockey and pool at North Thornhill Community Centre
• Drop-in drawing workshop at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre

Community partners include the Meta Centre, Community Living York South, VITA Community Living Services, Vaughan In Action Community Services and the York Region school boards.
NAAW is an annual event that encourages Canadians to recognize and remove barriers faced by people with disabilities and to celebrate achievements made by and for persons with disabilities. This year’s theme is Ready and Able to Work. Established in 1988, NAAW challenges Canadians to form partnerships in their communities and make improvements to the accessibility of services and facilities including transportation, housing, employment, recreation, education and communications.
