Vaughan Sets New Record Raising Funds for United Way of York Region
The City of Vaughan has presented a record-breaking cheque to the United Way of York Region. In a special presentation at this week’s Council meeting, Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council presented a cheque to Daniele Zanotti, Chief Executive Officer of the United Way in the amount of $73,136.38.
In addition, the Mayor has made a commitment to donate a further $15,000 from the money raised this year at the Mayor’s Gala and the Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua Annual Charity Golf Classic. Another $1,030 was raised by the Pierre Berton Resources Library.
"I am extremely proud of the efforts of City staff in raising this record amount for the United Way of York Region,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “This donation exemplifies the spirit of generosity that is so evident in our community and is a true reflection of the commitment of our staff to help those who need it most. The important work of the United Way will allow all of us to work together to build stronger communities."
The total amount committed to the City of Vaughan’s 2011 United Way Campaign was $89,166.36. The majority of the money came from staff donations and a number of special events held in October and November. Payroll donations accounted for $52,218.42. Other employee-driven initiatives raised $20,853.96. The staff campaign's goal was $65,000. Some of the activities included the City's second annual fire truck pull, bake sales, a Halloween costume competition, pool tournament and a stair climb challenge.
"We have exceptional staff at the City of Vaughan who organized and participated in a number of entertaining events to show their support for the United Way,” said City Manager Clayton Harris. "I would like to thank Barb Cribbett, Commissioner of Finance & City Treasurer and Chair of the 2011 United Way Campaign, and the 45 volunteer organizers who helped make this drive an unqualified success."
