Vaughan Twitter Chat and Photo Contest Encourage Community Gardening

June 3, 2014

The City of Vaughan is encouraging residents to get outdoors and volunteer at a local community garden. Vaughan Council approved a Community Garden Policy on April 8 that provides a framework for establishing community gardens in Vaughan.

Community gardens are a community initiative managed collectively by a group of local volunteers and fully accessible to the public. The harvest produced by these common gardens is donated to charitable causes and/or community members in need.

To celebrate the gardening season, the City recently introduced the Sprout-A-Garden photo contest. Residents are encouraged to submit photos of their flower or vegetable gardens for a chance to win one of three $40 gift cards for gardening tools and supplies. For more information and to enter, visit the contest tab on the City of Vaughan Facebook page.

The Environmental Sustainability office will also be hosting the #VaughanGardens Ask the Expert Twitter Chat on Monday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Residents can join the conversation to learn more about participating in community gardening activities.

If you are interested in starting or joining a community garden, contact environment@vaughan.ca or call 905-832-2281, ext. 8426.
