What’s open and closed in Vaughan on Simcoe Day
Simcoe Day is just around the corner, so many citizens are getting ready to enjoy the long weekend. But before making holiday plans, the City of Vaughan is reminding everyone of the following facility closures and modified hours on Monday, Aug. 1.
Municipal facilities
Most
facilities – including Vaughan City Hall – will be closed on Monday, Aug. 1 and
reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 2. Essential services, such as fire and emergency
response, and by-law and enforcement services, will continue uninterrupted. Non-essential
administrative services will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 2, by phone, email and
online.
Community centres and recreational programming
Vaughan
community centres will be closed on Monday, Aug. 1. Recreation programs, swim
lessons and summer camps will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
On Simcoe Day, residents can still enjoy a fun exercise session at home with the free full-length fitness classes (40- to 60-minutes long) available on the Recreation Services YouTube channel. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/recreation.
The Thornhill Outdoor Pool will operate on holiday hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for recreational and length swimming and aquafitness classes. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required at vaughan.perfectmind.com. For details, visit vaughan.ca/swim.
Outdoor park amenities
The following outdoor amenities will remain open
on Monday, Aug. 1:

- Basketball courts
- Bocce courts
- Off-leash dog parks
- Outdoor exercise equipment
- Playgrounds
- Skateboard parks
- Soccer fields
- Splashpads
- Tennis and pickleball courts
- Thornhill Outdoor Pool
- Trails
- Volleyball courts
Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL)
All VPL branches will be
closed on Monday, Aug. 1
and will reopen on Tuesday, Aug. 2, during regular operating hours. To

Citizens can still access many free digital items – including eBooks and audiobooks, films and television programs, music streaming services, e-learning courses, bilingual materials and more – any time through VPL at Home.
Waste collection
There is no waste collection on Mondays,
so waste collection for the week will not be impacted. Please have waste set
out by 7 a.m. on your regular waste pickup day. For the complete curbside

Citizens can register online at any time to purchase garbage tags, blue boxes and green bins and exchange broken City-branded bins through Service Vaughan. For more information on waste services, visit vaughan.ca/waste.
Vaughan Animal Services
The Vaughan Animal
Services Shelter will be closed on Monday, Aug. 1 and will reopen on Tuesday,
Aug. 2. Citizens can still purchase pet licensing tags online at any time through Service Vaughan. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/AnimalServices.
Access Vaughan
The
City’s contact centre will be closed on Monday, Aug. 1. However, a live agent
will be available to respond to municipal emergencies. For additional
information about holiday hours, City programs and municipal services on Simcoe

This marks the third year the City of Vaughan will formally recognize the August Civic Holiday as Simcoe Day. Vaughan Council officially renamed this day in honour of John Graves Simcoe – the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada and a leading proponent of the Act Against Slavery – on June 16, 2020.
