City service changes and modified hours on Monday, Aug. 2

Simcoe Day is just around the corner, which means many citizens are getting ready to enjoy the long weekend. But before making holiday plans, the City of Vaughan is reminding everyone of the following facility closures and modified hours on Monday, Aug. 2.

Municipal facilities
Most facilities – including Vaughan City Hall and the Joint Operations Centre – remain closed to the public until further notice in response to COVID-19. Essential services, such as fire and emergency response, and by-law and enforcement services, will continue uninterrupted on Simcoe Day. Non-essential administrative services will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 3, by phone, email and online.

Community centres and recreational programming
Vaughan community centres will be closed on Monday, Aug. 2. Fitness and swim sessions will be unavailable and will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 3. The vaccination clinic at Maple Community Centre will remain open. Visit york.ca/COVID19 for eligibility details and to book an appointment.

On Simcoe Day, residents can still enjoy a fun exercise session at home with free, full-length fitness classes (40- to 60-minutes long) available on Recreation Services’ YouTube channel. Indoor fitness classes will be resuming on Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Al Palladini, Father E. Bulfon, North Thornhill and Vellore Village community centres. Select fitness classes will be livestreamed via Zoom with limited spots available. For further details, visit vaughan.ca/fitness.

The Thornhill Outdoor Pool will be open for recreational and length swimming, and aquafitness classes on Simcoe Day. Pre-registration is required for all swims. For details and to sign up, visit vaughan.ca/swim.

Outdoor park amenities
The following outdoor amenities will remain open on Monday, Aug. 2:

  • Baseball fields
  • Basketball courts
  • Bocce courts
  • Off-leash dog park
  • Outdoor exercise equipment
  • Outdoor pool
  • Playgrounds
  • Skateboard parks
  • Soccer fields
  • Splashpads
  • Tennis and pickleball courts
  • Trails
  • Volleyball courts
The City urges the public to continue to do their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 while visiting outdoor amenities. It’s important to follow all York Region public health guidelines – including washing and sanitizing hands thoroughly and often before and after using the facilities, and wearing a face mask or covering when physical distancing cannot be maintained, among others. A reminder that splashpads and playgrounds are not sanitized.

Vaughan Public Libraries
All Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) branches will be closed on Monday, Aug, 2. Curbside pickup will be unavailable and will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 3, on regular operating hours at select branches. Bathurst Clark Resource Library, Civic Centre Resource Library and Pierre Berton Resource Library will reopen to customers on Tuesday, Aug. 3. To view curbside pickup information, including hours of operation, visit vaughanpl.info/curbside.

Citizens can still access many free digital items – including eBooks and audiobooks, films and television programs, music streaming services, e-learning courses, bilingual materials and more – on Simcoe Day through VPL at Home.

Waste collection holiday schedule
There is no waste collection on Mondays, so waste collection for the week will not be impacted. Please have waste set out by 7 a.m. on your regular waste pick-up day. For the complete curbside collection schedule, visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar.

Citizens can register online at any time to purchase garbage tags, blue boxes and green bins and exchange broken City-branded bins through Service Vaughan. For more information on all things waste in Vaughan, visit vaughan.ca/waste.

Vaughan Animal Services
The Vaughan Animal Services Shelter remains closed to the public on Monday, Aug. 2, and appointment-only adoption and pet recovery services will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 3. Citizens can still purchase pet licensing tags online at any time through Service Vaughan. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/AnimalServices.

Access Vaughan
The City’s contact centre will be closed on Monday, Aug. 2. However, a live agent will be available to respond to municipal emergencies. For additional information about holiday hours, City programs and municipal services on Simcoe Day, contact Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281 or accessvaughan@vaughan.ca.

This marks the second year the City of Vaughan will formally recognize the August Civic Holiday as Simcoe Day. Vaughan Council officially renamed this day in honour of John Graves Simcoe – the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada and a leading proponent of the Act Against Slavery – on June 16, 2020.
