As a York Regional Police officer, Garry Vosburg understands the importance of making a difference in the community. The longtime Maple resident has been giving back for more than 30 years as a volunteer and fundraiser for numerous local organizations. In recognition of his efforts, Vosburg was presented with the Civic Hero Award for Ward 1 by Vaughan Council yesterday.

Vosburg donates his time as a coach and has been involved with two not-for-profit Judo clubs as well as minor baseball and hockey, and is a committee member of the Special Olympics. He was a founding member of SantaFest in Maple, serving as parade manager, vice-chair and secretary, and he co-ordinated float support from York Regional Police, secured donations and oversaw construction of the Santa Claus float.

He also established and served as chair of the Great Maple Cart Derby which paired parents and their children, including mentors and youth from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, to build soap box cars from scrap materials to race. Vosburg has received many awards including the Police Exemplary Service Medal, the York Region Character Community Award and the Ontario Special Olympics Award of Honour.
