Learn more about this Special Advisory Committee below.

Why is the City creating this Special Advisory Committee?
At the April 27, 2022 Council Meeting, the City’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy and Multi-Year Action Plan (PDF) was approved. Addressing all forms of racism, discrimination and bigotry, including anti-Black racism, anti-Indigenous racism and religious intolerance, such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, is central to the success of this strategy.

In accordance with this strategy, the City plans on conducting extensive consultation with the diverse Black communities residing in Vaughan, including organizations within the GTA serving Black individuals, families and communities. Consultation through a community engagement process will inform the development of a report, recommendations and multi-year action plan to address anti-Black racism in Vaughan. The project requires the establishment of a project-bound special advisory committee dedicated to the Addressing Anti-Black Racism Community Engagement and Action-Plan project.

What is the goal of this Special Advisory Committee?
The Addressing Anti-Black Racism Special Advisory Committee will advise and guide the Addressing Anti-Black Racism Community Engagement and Action Plan project.

The committee’s mandate is to:
  • provide advice on the project.
  • facilitate community connections.
  • advise and guide the community engagement process.
  • provide feedback on the reports in each phase of the project.
  • provide feedback on the recommendations and action plan.

How many positions are available?
The City is looking for up to 10 Black citizens to serve on the Special Advisory Committee for approximately 15 months. The required time commitment will be five to 15 hours per month. An honorarium will be provided to all committee members to compensate for their time, effort and contribution to this project.

What are the eligibility requirements to join?
The City is committed to having diverse Black community members represented on the Addressing Anti-Black Racism Special Advisory Committee. The City is seeking representation from community and policy leaders with lived experience and/or expertise in issues impacting Black communities in Vaughan and reflecting the diversity of Black communities. By partnering with residents, community leaders and community organizations, the City can centre the voices of Black community members to collaboratively address anti-Black racism.
