Candle with care
Vaughan Fire and
Rescue Service offers safety tips for Valentine’s Day
Fire prevention doesn’t take a holiday, not even on Valentine’s Day. That’s why Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) will be at Maple GO Station on Feb. 14 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. giving out free coffee and chocolate to commuters, and reminding them to handle candles with care.

If residents
are planning a romantic candlelit meal to celebrate this occasion, they need to
be aware of the dangers of naked flames. VFRS has the following advice:
- Never leave lit candles unattended – put burning candles out when you leave the room and make sure they’re completely out before you go to bed.
- Place candles carefully – make sure they’re on a stable surface away from flammable objects such as curtains, furniture, bedding, books and magazines.
- Do not burn several candles close together – this can cause the flame to flare. (Mainly with tea lights.)
- Always put candles in a heat-resistant holder – the metal bases can reach temperatures more than three times the boiling point of water.
- Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and test it regularly – an active smoke alarm can buy you valuable time to get out, stay out and call 9-1-1.
- Make sure that everyone in your home knows what to do if a fire should occur – practice your escape route.
