Residents joined Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council in the civic square at Vaughan City Hall last evening to participate in the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

“This annual Christmas tree lighting is meaningful because it celebrates light, a powerful concept that brings people together in the spirit of hope and community,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “The holiday season is a special time to reflect on our blessings and what better way to do that than surrounded by friends and neighbours.  I am pleased that so many families and children joined us for this beautiful event that illuminated not only the tree, but all of our hearts.”

The event featured festive music by performers from Opera Belcanto of York, holiday refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus, who posed for photographs with children. There was also a holiday photo booth with festive props where residents posed for family photos taken by a professional photographer.

The balsam fir, standing at 35 feet tall, was delivered by Drysdale’s Tree Farms Ltd., a sustainable tree farm. The tree is decorated with more than 10,000 LED lights.

In the spirit of generosity during the holiday season, residents and visitors were encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys for newborns to children 18 years of age as part of the fourth annual City of Vaughan Toy Drive in support of the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish. The toy drive ends on Dec. 11, 2013.
