City Welcomes Approval of Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Subway Station Name

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua has welcomed the decision by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to name the final stop on the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, ‘Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.’ The decision was announced at a TTC meeting held on Wednesday, February 29.

“This is good news for the City of Vaughan,” said Mayor Bevilacqua. “The name of this station has significant meaning for our City. In addition to being consistent with the marketing and branding of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre, it’s significant in that the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station is a cornerstone project at the heart of Vaughan’s new downtown. Adopting this name is another positive step for the City as it continues to transform itself from a suburban environment to a world-class city.”

Located along Highway 7 west of Jane Street, the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre is a planned downtown development with business offices, residences, entertainment and cultural facilities, and pedestrian shopping areas. With approximately 179 hectares of development opportunities, it is the largest and most ambitious project in the City's history.

“The Commission’s decision to adopt the City’s recommended name is another example of how all of the partners in this project, the federal government, the province of Ontario, York Region, the City of Toronto and the TTC, continue to work collaboratively to make this subway extension a success,” said City Manager Clayton Harris.

The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) project will extend the existing Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway system from the City of Toronto to the City of Vaughan. Six subway stations will be built along the planned route: Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station; Highway 407 Station; Steeles West Station; York University Station; Finch West Station and Sheppard West Station. The 8.6 km subway extension is scheduled to open at the end of 2015.
