Discovery Centre To Celebrate The Life And Work Of Pierre Berton

The City of Vaughan is undertaking a feasibility study to establish a Discovery Centre that celebrates the life and work of the late Pierre Berton. A long-term resident of the Vaughan community of Kleinburg, the celebrated author and television personality published more than 50 books on Canada's history and the shaping of the national character.

"Preserving and honouring the creative and artistic contributions that have enriched our City's social and cultural landscape is an integral part of city building," said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. "Pierre Berton possessed a great talent for capturing the stories and drama in Canadian history, such as the immigrant experience which unites so many of us. His life's work continues to help all Canadians appreciate the spirit of this country.”‬

The Discovery Centre would bring Canadian history and culture to life. It would house both temporary and permanent interactive exhibits of artifacts and memorabilia relating to Pierre Berton’s writings and television shows and highlight his passion for the richness of Canada’s past. The centre is intended to be a tourist attraction, as well as a place where school children and visitors can become acquainted with the contributions of one of Vaughan’s most prominent citizens.

"The centre is an opportunity to further establish the Kleinburg community as a leading tourist destination," said Regional Councillor Michael Di Biase, Chair of the Pierre Berton Artifacts and Memorabilia Task Force. “Council is moving forward with a Feasibility Study which will see the project into its next phase of development and provide a detailed outline of the requirements and recommendations for the proposed centre.”

The task force is scheduled to submit its final recommendations to Council in December 2012.

Pierre Berton was an active member of the community for 55 years, supporting local events and environmental initiatives. From his Kleinburg base, he pursued a celebrated career as an author, historian, story-teller, journalist, interviewer, broadcaster and filmmaker. His best-selling works include The Klondike Gold Rush and The Last Spike.
