Register now for spring programs, beginning on March 22
Learn a valuable skill and stay active this spring with the City of Vaughan’s swim lessons and aquatic leadership programs! Registration is now open for Vaughan residents. Registration for non-residents opens on Tuesday, March 4.
Visit vaughan.ca/swim to browse swim lessons and aquatic leadership courses and head over to vaughan.perfectmind.com to register. Learn-to-swim programming starts at ages four months old for parents with tots and runs up to levels specifically designed for adult non-swimmers. Training and certification in aquatic leadership courses for ages 13 years and older are aimed at preparing participants for employment as a swim instructor or lifeguard. These programs also develop essential skills such as teamwork, problem solving, communication and critical thinking, which helps to enhance resumes, strengthen college and university applications, and provide a strong foundation for any career path. Programs start on Saturday, March 22 at all Vaughan community centre pools.
The City of Vaughan also offers a number of special interest aquatic programs, including:
- Optimal Diving: Beginner (learn-to-dive) participants learn how to execute dives and jumps mostly from a one-metre springboard or poolside. Intermediate divers focus on proper body position and techniques, learning the more complicated springboard dives and somersaults. Advanced (pre-competitive) participants learn skills that include both basic and somersaulting dives from a one-metre springboard and some basic dives from a three-metre springboard, focusing on proper body position and techniques while learning more complicated springboard dives and somersaults. Delivered in partnership with Optimal Diving Club.
- Fitness Swimmer (beginner and advanced): This program helps improve overall physical fitness and is a structured approach based on accepted training principles and practices, including interval training, sprints and distance swims. Swimmers participate in setting their own goals, designing workouts and learning to use pace clocks and timers to reach their target zone.
- Vaughan Lifesaving Club: Learn to save lives while getting physically fit with lifesaving, a competitive sport established by the Canadian Lifesaving Society (LSS). Throughout the year, LSS coaches train swimmers in five individual lifesaving events – obstacle swim, tow with fins, lifesaving medley, throwing accuracy and object support, and two team events (obstacle relay and medley relay). Emphasis is placed on improving the overall fitness of young athletes, including strength, power and endurance, and promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, achieving personal bests and having fun. Athletes participate in the National Junior Telegames and end the competition season at the Provincial Championships in June.
