Drum roll please: unveiling Vaughan's 10 winning snowplow names!
You submitted, you voted and now … the results are in! This morning, live on The Weather Network, Mayor Steven Del Duca and the City of Vaughan’s Public Works team officially revealed the 10 winning snowplow names as part of our first-ever Name the Plow initiative – and it was ‘snow’ successful!
The winning snowplow names of the 2023/24 winter season are:
- Austin Plowers
- Blizzard of Oz
- Clear-o-pathra
- Ctrl-salt-delete
- Flurrious George
- Optimus Plow
- Plower Ranger
- Sled Zeppelin
- Thaw Patrol
- Vaughan-illa Ice
Keep an eye out in your neighbourhood for these names on 10 of our snowplows as they clear Vaughan’s roads! And remember, keep a safe distance from the plows so they can do their jobs properly.
This past summer, our community submitted creative and family-friendly snowplow name ideas online. The response was incredible – we received nearly 400 submissions! After narrowing that down to the top 20 names, residents voted for their favourites online or in person at various City-led events, including the Vaughan Celebrates Concerts in the Park series and Vaughan Celebrates Canada Day. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Vaughan is winter ready
The Name the Plow initiative was fun, but Vaughan takes snow-clearing operations seriously. The City provides residents with a high level of snow removal services. Whether it’s reducing ice on roads, removing snow from streets or clearing it from paths, sidewalks and windrows, the City’s crews strive to ensure everyone can travel safely throughout Vaughan despite the weather.
The City has a fleet of more than 230 vehicles – including salter/snowplow units, windrow machines, sidewalk machines, pickup trucks equipped with plows and salters, cul-de-sac-clearing machines and anti-icing units – to ensure citizens are provided with high-quality winter services. The City uses this equipment to clear and maintain more than 2,200 lane-kilometres of roads and more than 1,200 kilometres of sidewalks and park walkways.

QUOTES
“City-building is a collective effort that requires thoughtful participation from government, residents and businesses. Our Name the Plow initiative was a unique engagement opportunity that brought the community together in the spirit of having a bit of fun. We received hundreds of entries, and even more votes, and the results were very close. I also want to thank our entire Public Works portfolio for working diligently throughout the winter, and year-round, to keep our community safe and moving. Rest assured, we’re ready to tackle this season head-on!”
- Mayor Steven Del Duca
“Our Name the Plow campaign was an exciting way to kick off our winter season and get residents, involved in the fun. Thank you to all who submitted a creative name idea and voted – we couldn’t have done it without you. I also want to thank the City’s Fleet Management team for their continued dedication to our winter operations. They work all year preparing for whatever the next Canadian winter throws our way, ensuring all our snowplows, salters, anti-icers and more are ready to hit the roads at any moment – and it does not go unnoticed.”
