Getting rid of large and bulky items?

What you need to know to dispose of toilets, mattresses and more safely

The City of Vaughan provides efficient and reliable waste collection services – and there are some ways you can help keep them running smoothly! If you have large or bulky items to dispose of, such as chairs, mattresses, tables and toilets, here’s what you need to know.

Large or bulky items can be placed curbside, and each piece counts as one item toward the three-item limit. The items must be kept dry and cannot exceed 68 kilograms (150 pounds) to reduce the weight for collection crews.

Chairs, tables, bookshelves and other large items must be free of all sharp and hazardous objects, such as nails. Sofa beds must have the mattress removed and the frame securely tied. The City reserves the right to refuse unsafe, overweight or oversized items.

Toilets

  • For all two-piece toilets, the toilet tank must be separated from the bowl before leaving it curbside for collection.
  • A toilet should not be placed in a cardboard box unless it has broken into smaller pieces.
    • Broken pieces must be placed in a cardboard box labelled “broken glass” and taped securely to prevent injury to staff.
  • Toilets can also be delivered to any of York Region’s waste depots. The Vaughan location is at 130 McCleary Crt.

Watch this short video to learn how to disassemble a two-piece toilet for curbside collection.

Irregular-shaped objects

  • Irregular-shaped objects that cannot fit into the proper waste bin will be collected if the item does not exceed 1.5 metres (five feet) in length and a maximum of 0.9 metres (1.5 feet) in any other dimension.
  • Ensure items are secured in a bundle not exceeding 20 kilograms (45 pounds).
  • Check to confirm all items are not defined as non-collectible waste.

Remember to place your items at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items for more information.

Residential appliance and metal pickup

If you’re looking to dispose of large metal items and appliances, the City collects these on Thursdays and by appointment only. Book an appointment and pay through Service Vaughan or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s Appliance and Metal Pickup webpage.

Curbside Giveaway Days

If you’re looking to dispose of gently-used large and bulky items, you can also do so during the City’s Curbside Giveaway Days. Back again on Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28, participate by placing items curbside for others to take and check out what other properties have to offer. Mark your items “free” when you place them at the curb on each Curbside Giveaway Day, beginning at 7 a.m. If you live in a condo, connect with your property management to see if you can label items in the bulky item waste room “free” for other residents to take before collection. If you’re unsure what items belong in the garbage or what can be recycled, download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to help determine what goes where. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week.
