Got excess garbage? Tag it!

Have you ever collected more household garbage than usual – even more than the collection day limit? The City of Vaughan offers garbage tags for purchase if you’re in a pickle.

Here’s everything you need to know about garbage tags and managing excess waste:

What are garbage tags?

A garbage tag must be attached to any item placed curbside exceeding the three-item limit, for up to 13 items, per household.

Where do I buy garbage tags?

Garbage tags can be purchased through Service Vaughan by phone at 905-832-2281 or online at vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan. They will be delivered to your home through Canada Post and could take up to two weeks. Refunds will not be issued on purchased or unused garbage tags.

You can also buy garbage tags at the following community centres while supplies last:

All community centres accept cashless payments only by credit card and debit card.

How much do garbage tags cost?

Garbage tags are $26 for a pack of 10. The City does not sell individual tags.

Do large and bulky items count toward the three-item garbage limit?

Yes. Large or bulky items, such as mattresses, chairs and toilets, can be placed curbside, and each piece counts as one item toward the three-item limit. Two-piece toilets must be disassembled to be collected. Watch this short video on how to properly disassemble a two-piece toilet. Read the guidelines for setting out large or bulky items for more details.

Large metal items and appliances, such as dishwashers and refrigerators, are collected by appointment only on Thursdays. Book an appointment and pay through Service Vaughan or call the City at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s appliance and metal pick up webpage

Place your items at the curb in the morning, when possible, and no later than 7 a.m. on your collection day. Crews will not return for items set out late.

Extra garbage and many other waste materials can also be dropped off at a York Region waste depot – fees may apply.

Don’t forget to use your blue box and green bin!

While garbage tags are handy, try to divert your waste to the blue box or green bin where applicable. Use our online ‘What Goes Where?’ sorting tool to check what waste bin an item belongs in. You can also download the free Recycle Coach app from the Apple App Store or Google Play for more sorting help. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week.

Visit a textile donation bin!

Don’t throw away gently used clothing and other household textiles, such as rugs, curtains and blankets. Donate all unwanted clothing and textiles to a second-hand storetextile donation bin in Vaughan or a York Region Community Environmental Centre. Even worn, torn or stained clothing can be recycled.
