Everything you need to know about construction season in Vaughan

Construction season is upon us, which will pave the way for improvements across the city designed to keep us moving safely throughout the community. 

 

Do you have questions about some of the work that is underway? Want to know about upcoming road closures and other traffic impacts?  

 

To help you get the information you’re looking for, here is a breakdown of which level of government or organization is responsible for key projects in Vaughan:

 

City of Vaughan

The City manages road improvement projects along municipal streets in Vaughan, including the Canda Drive – America Avenue Bridge, enhancements coming to Kleinburg Village and the Pavement Management Program. Traffic impacts, such as road closures or lane reductions, caused by these improvement projects are shared online at vaughan.ca/DisruptionsAndClosures.

 

York Region

York Region is responsible for projects on Regional roads in Vaughan, like Bathurst Street, Dufferin Street, Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive. Current road work projects led by the Region include, but are not limited to, improvements on Rutherford Road and on Major Mackenzie Drive, from Highway 400 to Jane Street, among others. Province of Ontario – Ministry of Transportation (MTO)

The Province of Ontario is responsible for maintaining 400-series highways. This includes, but are not limited to, projects like widening Highway 400, from Langstaff Road to Major Mackenzie Drive, from eight to 10 lanes, among other improvements. Transit projects
Throughout the year, transit agencies have projects underway that may impact your daily routine. Visit the appropriate organization’s website to learn more about their projects:

  1. York Region Transit (YRT) – YRT services all of York Region, including Vaughan with YRT conventional, Viva and on-request services. 
  2. Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) – Vaughan is the only municipality connected to Toronto by subway at the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC). 
  3. Metrolinx is responsible for projects related to GO Transit. This includes improvements to the Maple GO Station, which is part of the Metrolinx GO Expansion program. Questions about this project can be directed to Metrolinx’s Community Relations team at YorkRegion@metrolinx.com

 

Another major transit project underway in our city is the future Yonge North Subway Extension, which will extend service north to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill from the TTC’s Finch Station. The plan includes five stations, including three located in Vaughan along Yonge Street – at Steeles Avenue, Clark Avenue and Royal Orchard Boulevard – spanning approximately eight kilometres.
