Honouring the fallen at the Woodbridge Cenotaph
Today, Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council hosted a Remembrance Day service at the Woodbridge Cenotaph to commemorate the brave Canadians who fought and died for our country, during times of war, conflict and peace.
Many members of the public joined the Mayor and Members of Council in this ceremony of remembrance, honouring the service and sacrifice of our veterans. Following a march to the Cenotaph, dignitaries and residents paid tribute with a rendition of O Canada, and at 11 a.m. precisely, bowed their heads for a moment of silence. A Cadet from Squadron 283 honoured the gathering with a reading of In Flanders Fields. It served as a fitting tribute for those who gave so much for our freedom.
As a reflection of the City of Vaughan’s commitment to honouring the remarkable service and sacrifice of Vaughan residents, Mayor Del Duca and Members of Council proclaimed the month of November, in perpetuity, "Remembrance Month."
Throughout November, you are encouraged to share thoughts of remembrance and messages of peace on the City of Vaughan’s poppy wall. You can also view this year’s exhibit, Families in Arms, on display at City Hall until Friday, Nov. 17. This City-curated exhibit explores the impact of war on soldiers and those they left behind and features families from Vaughan, both at home and abroad. The exhibit is also available to view online at vaughan.ca/RemembranceMonth and features additional photos and details not included in the in-person exhibit.
QUOTE
“To mark Remembrance Day, I, and my Council colleagues, joined our community at the Woodbridge Cenotaph to pay tribute to those who fought and died to protect our rights and freedoms. We were joined by many residents who gathered to pay tribute to our veterans and fallen soldiers. Every November, we keep those Canadians who served close to our hearts with a poppy pinned to our chest. It is a meaningful symbol of our unwavering gratitude and a promise that we will always remember their unimaginable sacrifice. Today, and every day, we are indebted to their remarkable service to this country. Lest we forget.”
