Join Vaughan’s Christmas Bird Count walk this December!
Bird watchers, unite! What better way to enjoy the winter season than by spreading your wings and taking in the beauty of nature? The City of Vaughan is hosting a Christmas Bird Count walk this December. Take part to learn more about the many different bird populations that live in Vaughan, hone in on your avian identification skills, help locate species while on a nature walk and more!
Want to get involved? Join City staff on Sunday, Dec. 17 at the Elder’s Mills Nature Reserve (230 Napa Valley Ave.) to participate in a guided walk from 10 a.m. to noon. Parking is available on Napa Valley Avenue, and the group will meet at the trail entrance between Napa Valley Avenue and Montebello Avenue. While on the walk, help count the number of birds and species you see and hear. Both beginner and intermediate bird watchers are welcome.
Not sure if you know enough about birds to take part? No problem! We will begin the walk with a basic overview on birding and some of the species we are likely to see.
Space is limited, so register now to confirm your attendance!
This event will be held rain, snow, wind or shine. The event will also require some walking. Please dress appropriately. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own binoculars, however we will have extra pairs on-site for those who need it.
Following the event, we will share the data we collect in the field with the Audubon Christmas Bird Count – such as the number of birds spotted, the number of species seen and local weather conditions that morning. The Audubon Christmas Bird Count is Canada’s longest-running community science bird project. By studying and protecting birds, we can understand the overall health of our ecosystems and the environment.
