Health and well-being of citizens remain top priorities for Vaughan

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua issued the following statement, following a kickoff event at the City of Vaughan’s Joint Operations Centre:

“Today, the City of Vaughan joined communities across Canada to mark Safety and Health Week, as well as Emergency Preparedness Week in Ontario.

“We implement a best practices approach that ensures we have the resources to cope with disaster when it strikes.

“The emergency training undertaken by City staff has proven invaluable on countless occasions. Under the leadership of our Fire Chief, Deryn Rizzi, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service received an outstanding 100 per cent satisfaction rating in our latest Citizen Satisfaction Survey.

“York Regional Police and York Region EMS are our trusted partners, and with their support, our citizens have peace of mind knowing we live in one of the safest communities in Canada.

“There have been examples – past and present – that remind us not to be complacent, but instead to be diligent in our planning and preparation for an emergency.

“It was a blessing no one was seriously injured when a tornado significantly damaged parts of our city 10 years ago.

“Similarly, during the 2013 ice storm, the City and community came together to ensure citizen safety remained a top priority.

“More recently, we have all seen the awesome force of nature, as powerful and devastating flooding impacts communities here in Ontario as well as Quebec.

“On April 29, our city hosted an Injured Workers Memorial. It was a poignant reminder that we all have the right to be safe while doing our job.

“Together, everyone can help make a difference to safeguard the lives of workers.

“Today’s event, and this entire week, provides an important reminder to all of us that by being prepared for emergencies, we can better protect ourselves and our loved ones.

“I also encourage everyone to take this opportunity to learn more about workplace health and safety.

“In Vaughan, we embrace our shared responsibility for the well-being of all citizens.”
