Mayor Bevilacqua recognizes Israel Independence Day
Vaughan remains
committed to celebrating diversity and multiculturalism
Mayor Maurizio
Bevilacqua issued the following statement during a flag-raising ceremony
outside Vaughan City Hall to recognize Yom Ha'atzmaut, Israel Independence Day:
“In Vaughan, we are
grateful and proud to have a thriving Jewish community that contributes
significantly to our city. We appreciate their many economic, social and
cultural achievements.
“We are also reminded
of the role our Jewish residents play in strengthening our relationships and
adding to our national diversity.
“This flag-raising
ceremony coincides with May being Jewish Heritage Month, which is being
supported and promoted through the City’s Culture Days
program.
“Vaughan has partnered
with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs to host Jewish Heritage
Month and to give the broader community further opportunities to learn, share
and celebrate the history and culture of Jewish-Canadians.
“We share a commitment
to safeguard the friendship between Canada and the countries of origin of our
many citizens. Multiculturalism is fundamental to our belief that all citizens
are equal.
“It ensures everyone
can keep their identities, take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of
belonging.
“We recognize the
potential of all Canadians and encourage them to participate in civic life and
take an active role in shaping our city’s future.
“Today’s event is
further proof of that participation. By honouring our historical traditions, we
help ensure that our young people and future generations will preserve and
appreciate our rich heritage.
“I am proud and
grateful to live in a city where we embrace our diversity and celebrate
community every day.”
