An official groundbreaking ceremony took place recently to mark the beginning of construction of a new City-owned fitness facility at the Vellore Village Community Centre.

“I believe that a healthy community is a happy community.  Here in Vaughan we pride ourselves on being able to provide our residents with the very best in recreational facilities that support and promote a healthy lifestyle. This new fitness centre will give residents the opportunity to incorporate physical fitness in their daily routines,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua.  “The City of Vaughan promotes and sponsors a variety of initiatives to help keep us fit, including our Active Together Physical Activity Strategy and CBC’s Live Right Now weight-loss challenge. Currently, we have five City-owned fitness centres conveniently located across Vaughan.”

Construction of the new facility began in March and the approximate completion date will be near the end of 2012. It will be located at the east end of the Vellore Village Community Centre facing Weston Road. The two-level, 10,000-square-foot facility will feature a lobby, change rooms, washrooms, saunas, showers and lockers on the upper floor and a workout area and cycling studio on the ground level.

There will be direct access to the existing swimming pool and the facility will be equipped with treadmills, cross-trainers, exercise bikes, strength training machines, free weights  and more. Membership will include an exercise program, use of all equipment and cycling, fitness and aqua fitness classes.
To reduce the environmental impact, major design features involve the use of high-performance windows, heat recovery system, direct and indirect lighting with occupancy sensors and water conserving landscaping and plumbing fixtures. As well, recycled materials used during construction diverts building products from landfill sites.

“Our fitness centres are state-of-the-art and the staff are qualified, friendly and knowledgeable,” said Ward 3 Councillor Rosanna DeFrancesca. “Services include no lock-in contracts and monthly plan options. The new facility will be a great place to meet your neighbours and make new friends.”
