Vaughan Receives Grant To Support Emergency Preparedness

The City of Vaughan has received a grant from Public Safety Canada’s Joint Emergency Preparedness Program (JEPP) which contributed 45 per cent of the cost of two Digital Vehicular Repeaters (DVR) for the Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service.

The DVR is used to enhance and strengthen the signal for portable radios and ensure communications between firefighters during emergencies in signal troubled areas.

“I would like to thank the federal and provincial governments for their continued support of emergency preparedness,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “This pro-active initiative will help save lives and lower the risk of injury for our community and our emergency response personnel.”

The JEPP grant was used to purchase the initial two DVR units. These repeaters are part of an eight-unit project to be used by fire crews while working at emergencies across the city.

JEPP is a national initiative created by the federal government in 1980 and is designed to enhance national emergency response capabilities. The aim of the program is to establish a uniform level of emergency management across the country. It is administered by Public Safety Canada in cooperation with the federal, provincial and territorial governments.

“The financial support of the grant allows us to provide the Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service with the tools needed to manage an emergency in the City,” said City Manager Clayton Harris.
