War of 1812

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month in June, you’re invited to learn about the War of 1812 through the experience of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

The Outcome of the War of 1812: First Nations Betrayed exhibit is now on display at Vaughan City Hall (2141 Major Mackenzie Dr.).

On loan from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN), the exhibit explores the war from a First Nation’s perspective. It spotlights the pivotal alliance between the MCFN and British forces, and their significant ties to southern Ontario. Through narratives of resilience, betrayal and sovereignty, the display sheds light on the impact of key treaties and battles, including Treaty No. 13 and the establishment of the Credit Mission Village.

To tell this story, the exhibit, which is available in English, French and Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway), includes a replica ceremonial tomahawk, a table with historical accounts, a 200-year timeline and educational panels. Learn more in the exhibit guide (PDF).

The exhibit is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Wednesday, July 3. It will then be on display at Pierre Berton Resource Library (4921 Rutherford Rd.) from Friday, July 5 to Friday, Aug. 2.

The exhibit is hosted during National Indigenous History Month and in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, both of which are proclaimed by the City annually. It provides an opportunity to learn more about the unique cultures, traditions and history of the First Nations from their own perspectives.

Vaughan is home to diverse First Nations, Métis and Inuit people today, and the City is encouraging the community to come visit the exhibit to learn more about Indigenous heritage in Vaughan and across Canada.
