With sweeping new U.S. tariffs now in effect, the City of Vaughan’s Economic Development department is here to help local businesses navigate this challenging and ever evolving time.
On March 4, Vaughan became the first municipality in Ontario to ban U.S. suppliers. Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council took decisive action to protect the local, provincial and national economy by approving a new procurement strategy that prioritizes Canadian products, goods and services, and bans U.S. suppliers from competing on or being awarded municipal contracts. More information about this policy is available in this statement issued by Mayor Del Duca.
This direction came following the approval of a Member’s Resolution (PDF) issued by Mayor Del Duca on Feb. 5 calling for the development of a policy to prioritize buying Canadian in the wake of then potential tariffs by the U.S.
Since January, the Economic Development team has been actively engaging with local businesses, stakeholders and other economic development organizations to address the challenges and concerns related to the new tariffs as well as discuss best practices to support the local business community.
As a result of these conversations, Vaughan’s Economic Development department has created a one-stop online resource – vaughanbusiness.ca/tariffs – to help businesses stay updated and leverage a variety of supports and resources. The site will help connect businesses with funding support opportunities as they become available, provide resources to explore new markets, identify local suppliers, and link to industry and region-specific news channels.
The City’s Economic Development department will continue to monitor the situation and update vaughanbusiness.ca/tariffs with new supports and resources as they become available. Businesses can also connect with the Economic Development team at ed@vaughan.ca for guidance and one-on-one support.
