Staying on your ‘waste’ schedule

What you need to know to help collection days run seamlessly

With the hustle and bustle of going to work, school and other commitments, you may be placing your waste items at the curb too early before your scheduled collection day.

The City of Vaughan is reminding everyone that waste should be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before collection and no later than 7 a.m. the day of collection. This helps to reduce the chance of materials getting knocked over, blown away by wind or wet from rain.

If you need help sorting your items, the City has many tips and resources available!

Large and bulky items

Large or bulky items, such as mattresses and toilets, can be placed curbside, and each piece counts as one item toward the six-item limit. Large items must be kept dry to reduce the weight for collection crews and cannot exceed 68 kilograms (150 pounds). The City reserves the right to refuse unsafe, overweight or oversized items.

Chairs, tables, bookshelves and other large items must be free of hazards (such as nails) and secured properly. Sofa beds must have the mattress removed and frame securely tied. Toilet tanks must be separated from the bowl for all two-piece toilets. Toilets can also be delivered to any of York Region’s waste depots. The Vaughan location is at 130 McCleary Crt – disposal fees will apply. Additionally, construction and renovation waste are not picked up curbside but can also be taken to the waste depot in Vaughan – fees will also apply.

Read the City’s guidelines for setting out large or bulky items or visit vaughan.ca/waste for additional details.

Residential appliance and metal pickup

If you’re looking to dispose of large metal items and appliances, such as barbecues, stoves and washing machines, the City collects these by appointment only on Thursdays. Book an appointment and pay through Service Vaughan or call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City’s Appliance and Metal Pickup webpage.

Exchange or purchase a blue box or green bin

Need a new blue box or green bin? You can purchase these in person at select community centres or online through Service Vaughan and have them delivered right to your door. You can also sign up to exchange a broken City-issued blue box or green bin for a new one at vaughan.ca/ServiceVaughan.

If you’re unsure what items belong in the garbage or what can be recycled, download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to help determine what goes where. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put at the curb each week.
