Vaughan celebrates International Archives Day

 

The lands the city of Vaughan is situated on have a rich and varied history that have helped shape the thriving community it is today. In honour of International Archives Day, take a walk down memory lane and revisit some of the past highlights from the City of Vaughan’s monthly Archives series: 

 

 

Want to learn more about Vaughan’s history? The City’s Archival Database is viewable online! This accessible and keyword-searchable catalogue provides you with access to the City’s Archival collection and various digital resources. Check back often – the database is updated regularly with new content.

 

Established in 1988, the City’s Archives is home to more than 600 collections, consisting of both City and cultural records about Vaughan from 1703 to the present day. Records include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • business, church, community and school records
  • census records
  • City business records with long-term legal and administrative value (i.e. Council minutes, by-laws, assessment rolls, financial records and reports)
  • historical maps, plans and aerials
  • historical photographs
  • land records
  • newspapers
  • personal papers of residents and families (i.e. diaries, family histories, journals and letters)
  • records of local organizations (past and present)
