Vaughan Celebrates Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake
The City of Vaughan has partnered with the Federation of Chinese Canadians in York Region to host a special Chinese New Year celebration this Sunday, February 17 from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Vaughan City Hall. The official welcome will take place at 2 p.m.
Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua and Members of Council invite residents, community groups, businesses and City staff to take part in welcoming the Year of the Snake. With the support of a number of sponsors, including the presenting sponsor, PowerStream, the celebration will open with the traditional lion dance eye-dotting ceremony and will feature a variety of cultural performances, including the Shaolin Monks, traditional Chinese folk dance and instruments, fortune-telling, Chinese Opera, and of course the God of Fortune. Chinese calligraphy and craft activities, art displays and customary Chinese refreshments will also be showcased. Attendees are encouraged to bring their camera for a photo opportunity with the God of Fortune.
The Chinese New Year is one of the most elaborate, colourful and important traditional Chinese festivals celebrated around the world. It is a time to congratulate each other on having completed another year, and a time to part with the old and welcome in the new.
