Vaughan Celebrates National Youth Arts Week 2014 with Artwork Exhibit and Youth Arts Night Festivities
April 29, 2014
The City of Vaughan will celebrate National Youth Arts Week from May 1 to 7 by showcasing the artistic creativity of youth with an exhibition of featured artwork created by students of the St. Elizabeth Catholic high school regional arts program.
The exhibition, titled From Where I Stand, will be on display in the Vaughan City Hall atrium gallery Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. from May 1 to 23. The artwork is inspired by and interprets urban and suburban landscapes through the lens of contemporary culture. The selected pieces also offer insight into complex relationships and perspectives.
Vaughan’s celebration of National Youth Arts Week culminates with Youth Arts Night, a free event that will be held at Vaughan City Hall on May 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Evening festivities include the launch of a new interactive app, Explore150, with guest speaker Jennifer Corriero, co-founder and executive director of TakingITGlobal. Motivational speaker Coco LaRain and the B.E.L.L.A.S. Performing Arts Troupe will entertain guests with dance, drama, spoken-word poetry and song. Musical entertainment will be provided by Shamaia aka DJ Afroditee. York Regional Police community youth officer and guest speaker Antonio Cedrone will present a spoken-word video inspired by local artists that focuses on anti-bullying.
National Youth Arts Week is held annually during the first week of May and has been instrumental in bringing together communities across Canada to celebrate outstanding youth-led events and spotlight the skills, talents and creative expression of youth aged 13 to 30.
