Vaughan Celebrates Recreation And Parks Month With Free Activities

Complimentary drop-in activities are being offered at community centres and parks across Vaughan from June 1 to 30, 2011, in support of the provincial initiative “June is Recreation and Parks Month.” A variety of indoor and outdoor sports, fitness, creative and performing arts, and swimming programs are available for all ages and abilities.

Recreation and Parks Month offers something for everyone, from preschoolers to older adults, from the sports-minded to the artistically inclined. Preschoolers can enjoy crafts, story time, games, kindergym and parachute fun during Playfun, while children can create a craft or keepsake in Crafty Corner. Teens can attend events geared specifically for them, including a youth pool tournament, basketball competitions, soccer tournament, ball hockey and rollerblading sessions.

Adults can keep physically active by gearing up for a Power Walk, or practicing their rhythm during a Drumfit or Hustle and Swing class. Al Palladini, Father Ermanno Bulfon, Garnet A. Williams, Maple and North Thornhill Fitness Centres will run specialty fitness classes for individuals 14 years and older, as well as offer a free guest day for members.

A variety of parent-and-child programs are also available so families can get active together. These include:
• Family Indoor Sports, a recreational program where individuals can practice their sports skills or play a game of pick-up basketball or volleyball;
• Family Boot Camp, an exciting cardio workout that includes strength, circuit, and agility training; and
• Family Zumba, a Latin-inspired dance class.
Other family-oriented sports programs include badminton, soccer, tennis and bowling.

With the warmer weather on hand, several programs will be held outdoors, including: Tai-Chi in the Park, Power Walk to Boyd Park, Stroller Fit in the Park and Walk & Talk. Two official park openings will also take place: Hillside Park in Woodbridge, and Jack Pine Park in Maple. The third annual “Serve for Kids” Beach Volleyball Tournament for adults 18 years and older, boasts more fun in the sun. Proceeds from the all-day event, held at the Sports Village, will go toward RecAssist, the City of Vaughan fee assistance program.

Residents can also cool off at any of the City’s ten pools, including the Thornhill Outdoor Pool, which opens Saturday, June 25. Enjoy a leisurely swim, join an aquafitness class, or compete in diving games and water polo matches during specialty events at select pools.

June is Recreation and Parks Month is an Active Together initiative. Launched in May 2009, the City's Active Together Physical Activity Strategy aims to increase the physical activity levels of Vaughan residents by 10 per cent and reduce their "screen time" by 10 per cent by the year 2020.
