Vaughan Community Centres Offer Holiday Activities for the Family

The City of Vaughan is offering family-friendly, drop-in leisure activities at community centres across the City during the holiday break from Dec. 20, 2013 to Jan. 3, 2014.
Free recreational skating, sponsored by Tim Hortons, is available at Al Palladini, Garnet A. Williams and Maple arenas on select dates and times. The City’s outdoor rinks offer free, supervised recreational skating at scheduled times and unsupervised shinny hockey at all other times. Other recreational programs, available for a nominal fee, include swimming, aquafitness, drop-in badminton, basketball, family dodgeball, family yoga, adult and youth games room, youth open gym, bocce, bowling and shinny hockey. On Dec. 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Maple Community Centre will be featuring a free Bricks 4 Kidz LEGO® fun and hands-on activity program for children aged three to13.
Community centre youth rooms are open for youth aged 10 to 17 for foosball, air hockey, pool, ping pong, Xbox and Wii, in addition to recreational youth sports in facility gymnasiums. Vaughan fitness centres, which feature various amenities including cardio and strength-training equipment, squash courts, running tracks, and fitness classes such as Pilates, zumba, yoga and cycling, are open to residents 14 years and older.
In addition to drop-in activities, a special pre-registered day camp called Holiday Happenings is offered at Garnet A. Williams Community Centre for children aged four to 12. Camp activities geared to keep children motivated during the holiday break include arts and crafts, sports, games, daily swimming and skating. Maple Community Centre offers a special needs camp, Kool Holidays, for children 12 and older that features swimming, cooking, arts and crafts, co-operative games and a visit to the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Holiday activities schedules are available at all City community centres and online at vaughan.ca/recreation. Residents are encouraged to check the times and dates of preferred locations as facilities may vary in hours of operation. All facilities are closed Dec. 25, 2013 and Jan. 1, 2014.
