Tissues do not go in the blue box – learn what items can and can’t be recycled

Did you know one of the top contaminants found in Vaughan’s blue boxes is tissues? These actually belong in the green bin! To help you understand what waste items go where, the City of Vaughan is providing a quick guide on what is and isn’t recyclable.

Here are common household items that can’t go in the blue box and where they belong instead:

  • Batteries – take to a York Region waste depot for safe disposal
  • Black plastic – place in the garbage
  • Coffee cups – place in the garbage
  • Napkins – place in the green bin
  • Paint – take to a York Region waste depot
  • Paper towels – place in the green bin
  • Plastic cutlery – place in the garbage
  • Sanitary wipes – place in the garbage
  • Styrofoam™ – place in the garbage
  • Tissues – place in the green bin

These are items that can go in the blue box:

  • Aluminum foil, trays and plates
  • Cardboard – flattened and tied in bundles with string, no larger than 0.6 metres by 0.6 metres by 0.3 metres (two feet by two feet by one foot)
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper
  • Plastic bottles and food containers – excluding black plastic

Ensure all food containers, bottles and jars are emptied, rinsed and loose before placing them in the blue box.

Make sorting easier!

If you don’t know where a waste item belongs, check online with the City’s ‘What Goes Where?’ sorting tool by using the search bar. You can also download the Recycle Coach app through the Apple App Store or Google Play to check where a waste item belongs. The app provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week.

If you need a new blue box or green bin, you can purchase them online through Service Vaughan and have them delivered right to your door. Alternatively, buy these items in person at select community centres. You can also sign up through Service Vaughan to exchange a broken City-issued blue box or green bin for a new one.
