Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service has launched a new 3D animation video game designed to educate youth about fire safety and fire prevention. The release of the game, titled Flashover, coincides with Vaughan Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 6 to Oct. 12.
“This type of educational tool is an innovative way to reach young people and share important fire safety strategies in an engaging and informative way,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Vaughan Fire and Rescue Service have always provided a high level of emergency service to our residents and I’m confident this new online application will contribute to making our community a safer place.”
Flashover is the first educational video game of its kind in Canada targeted at youth 10-14 years of age with this level of 3D interaction and graphics. The game is played from a first-person point of view and allows players to safely explore and react to situations in which fire may occur. Players earn points for each corrective action they take and receive feedback at the end of each game level based on their behaviour.
“The main audience for this game is children and young teenagers who may be at a stage in their lives when they are getting more responsibilities at home, such as babysitting and cooking, and may not know how to react properly in the event of a fire,” said fire Chief Larry Bentley. “We found it fitting to launch this initiative during Fire Prevention Week, which this year focuses on preventing kitchen and cooking fires.”
New content and scenarios will be added to the game on a continual basis to keep it exciting for new and returning players.
