The City of Vaughan is marking Local Government Week, which runs from Oct. 20 to Oct. 26, to create awareness about municipal government.

“Local Government Week is an opportunity to engage young people and increase awareness of the role that municipal government plays in the community,” said Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua. “Municipal government is the level of government that impacts residents the most and this week allows us to educate students on the services and responsibilities of the City as well as encouraging them to become community leaders.”

As part of this week, students in Grade 5 from Divine Mercy Catholic Elementary School in Maple recently visited City Hall to learn about the role municipal government plays in their everyday lives. They had the opportunity to meet with City staff from various departments, including Archives, Environmental Sustainability, Vaughan Fire and Rescue Services and the City Clerk’s Office. Mayor Bevilacqua provided insights on the City’s services and role in the community, and tested their municipal government knowledge.

Local Government Week is an educational awareness campaign promoted by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH), the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO).
