Vaughan takes action to enhance public safety
The first in a series of City-led meetings on community safety is taking place on Feb. 23
Public safety is a leading priority for the City of Vaughan, and many steps are being taken to preserve and enhance our quality of life. From City-led community meetings to collaborating with other levels of government and key stakeholders, work is underway to advance this important matter.
In the coming months, the City will hold a series of meetings on community safety to provide updates in each ward and hear about the issues that impact you. These meetings will include presentations by York Regional Police (YRP), the City’s By-law and Compliance, Licensing and Permit Services team, Members of Council and other key stakeholders.
Seating will be limited. Please arrive early! Input received at these meetings will help inform future action on community safety in Vaughan.
As well, Mayor Del Duca has reached out to key stakeholders – including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – to call for all levels of government to work together to ensure people can be safe and secure as they live their lives. He reiterated his support for the recent call made by Canada's Premiers and Territorial Leaders, and Ontario’s Big City Mayors for the federal government to urgently modernize Canada's bail system to ensure repeat dangerous offenders are kept off our streets.
Mayor Del Duca has also written to Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Hon. Marco Mendicino, regarding auto thefts in Vaughan and across York Region. Mayor Del Duca called for the Minister to confirm what protocols are used by the Canadian Border Services Agency for screening and/or inspections of exports leaving our country to ensure everything possible is being done to stop cars from being stolen and their parts from being exported.
The City continues to work with its partners at YRP to further advance community safety initiatives. Deputy Mayor and Local and Regional Councillor Linda Jackson was appointed to the YRP Services Board for the 2022-2026 Term of Council. Visit YRP’s website for more information on crime prevention and other resources.
