City service changes and modified hours on Monday, Sept. 6

Labour Day is coming up, which means it's almost time to (safely!) enjoy the long weekend! Do you know what's open and closed for the holiday? The City of Vaughan is reminding the community of the following facility closures and modified hours in effect on Monday, Sept. 6.

Municipal facilities

Most facilities – including Vaughan City Hall and the Joint Operations Centre – remain closed to the public until further notice in response to COVID-19. Essential services, such as fire and emergency response and by-law and enforcement services, continue uninterrupted daily, including on Labour Day. Non-essential administrative services will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7, by phone, email and online.

Community centres and recreational programming

The Thornhill Outdoor Pool remains open for recreational swimming and length swimming and aquafitness classes on Labour Day. Pre-registration is required for all swims. For details and to sign up, visit vaughan.ca/swim.

All other Vaughan community centres will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6. Fitness and swim sessions will be unavailable and will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 7. The vaccination clinic at Maple Community Centre will remain open. Visit york.ca/COVID19 for vaccine eligibility details and to book an appointment.

On Labour Day, citizens can still enjoy a fun exercise session at home with free, full-length fitness classes (40- to 60-minutes long) available on Recreation Services’ YouTube channel. Indoor fitness classes will be resuming on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Al Palladini, Father E. Bulfon, North Thornhill and Vellore Village community centres. Select fitness classes will also be livestreamed via Zoom on the holiday Monday, with limited spots available. For further details, visit vaughan.ca/fitness.

Outdoor park amenities

The following outdoor amenities will remain open on Monday, Sept. 6:

  • Baseball fields
  • Basketball courts
  • Bocce courts
  • Off-leash dog park
  • Outdoor exercise equipment
  • Outdoor pool
  • Playgrounds
  • Skateboard parks
  • Soccer fields
  • Splashpads
  • Tennis and pickleball courts
  • Trails
  • Volleyball courts

The City’s 20 splashpads are open daily until Monday, Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. After Labour Day, splashpads will remain open on weekends only from Saturday, Sept. 11 until Sunday, Oct. 3.

The City urges the public to continue to do their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 while visiting outdoor amenities. It’s important to follow all York Region public health guidelines – including washing and sanitizing hands thoroughly and often before and after using the facilities, and wearing a face mask or covering when physical distancing cannot be maintained, among others. Splashpads and playgrounds are not sanitized – ensure you remain vigilant.

Vaughan Public Libraries

All Vaughan Public Libraries (VPL) branches will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6. All VPL branches will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with the exception of Maple Library for renovations. To view the hours of operation at all branches, visit vaughanpl.info.

Have fun with VPL at home on Labour Day! Citizens can still access many free digital items – including eBooks and audiobooks, films and television programs, music streaming services, e-learning courses, bilingual materials and more – through VPL at Home.

Waste collection holiday schedule

There is no waste collection on Mondays, so waste collection for the week will not be impacted. Please have waste set out by 7 a.m. on your regular waste pick-up day. For the complete curbside collection schedule, visit vaughan.ca/WasteCalendar.

Citizens can register online at any time to purchase garbage tags, blue boxes and green bins and exchange broken City-branded bins through Service Vaughan. For more information on all things waste in Vaughan, visit vaughan.ca/waste.

Citizens can still purchase pet licensing tags online at any time through Service Vaughan. For more information, visit vaughan.ca/AnimalServices.
